How to Use VoIP?

Making VoIP phone calls are easy and straight forward. It works exactly the same way as your existing telephone service. Pick up the phone, listen for a dial tone and dial the required telephone number, whether it is a local, national or overseas call. There are three things that you need in order to be able to make VoIP phone calls - Internet connection, a VoIP device and an account with a VoIP provider. Below are the three main types of devices that you can use to make VoIP phone calls:

Your existing normal phone

Both cordless and corded phones can be used. To make VoIP phone calls using your existing normal phone, you need an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter). Also known as a ‘voice box’, ‘adapter’ and sometimes a ‘VoIP adapter’. An ATA allows you to enjoy the benefit that your phone service will always be available even when your computer is switched off.

To use an ATA, simply plug your existing cordless or corded phone and broadband modem/router into the ATA. When your atpNET VoIP service is activated, use your existing cordless or corded phone to make phone calls like you normally do.

VoIP phone

Looks and functions like a normal phone, but with feature rich call handling functionality. A VoIP phone provides users an enriched experience with features such as voicemail, do not disturb, call hold and many more. A VoIP phone is easy to set up and to use. Simply plug the VoIP phone into your broadband modem/router and when your atpNET VoIP service is activated, lift up the handset and dial the desired number. It’s that simple! A VoIP phone has an in-built VoIP adapter (ATA) so you don’t need to purchase an ATA. A VoIP phone also allows you to make and receive calls while your computer is switched off.

Softphone

Think of it as a virtual phone. It is a VoIP software program that you will need to install onto your computer.  A softphone converts your computer to a phone, enabling you to dial your desired phone number directly on your computer. To use Softphone, a headset and microphone is usually required and your computer has to be switched on.
