What is VoIP?
VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol or commonly known as Internet or broadband telephony, is the transmission of voice communications through the Internet. It is a new generation communication technology that allows phone calls to be made over your existing broadband connection.
Traditionally, phone calls that you make to or from a mobile or fixed-line number are usually transmitted through the public switched telephone network (PSTN), which consist of copper wires and cables. The PSTN infrastructure requires high maintenance and as a result, phone calls via the PSTN is expensive and are reflected in your telephone bill.
Phone calls made using the VoIP technology are transmitted using the Internet. VoIP phone calls bypass PSTN in whole or part, avoiding the charges of using the PSTN infrastructure.
